Dual Diameter Pipeline Pigs

Royal Poly Products have extensive experience in the design, testing and manufacture of Dual Diameter Pigs for a host of applications, this stems from many years of practical pigging knowledge and an understanding of pig dynamics that has been gained by the technical team and management at Royal Poly Products.

Why Dual Diameter Pigs?

As Oil and Gas discoveries become smaller we have seen an increase in the need to tie in different sized pipelines to existing offshore facilities and infrastructure, this has become the norm rather than the exception, in turn this has lead to an escalation in the requirement of Dual Diameter Pigs, pushing the boundaries of conventional pigging.

Dual-diameter Pigs must be able to perform effectively in all diameters, the transition between the different diameters should be a smooth as possible.

Key Design Considerations

As oil and gas discoveries become smaller, operators increasingly need to tie in different-sized pipelines to existing offshore facilities and infrastructure. What was once an exception has now become common practice. This trend has driven demand for Dual Diameter Pigs, pushing the boundaries of conventional pigging to meet these new challenges.

Pipeline configuration – lengths of each diameter, transitions, and flow profiles.

Diameter sequence – large-to-small, small-to-large, or mixed combinations.

Safe negotiation of critical pipeline features – bends, tees, wyes, valves, and branches.

Transition types – abrupt vs. gradual diameter changes.

Launching & receiving facilities – assessing whether special equipment is needed.

Pig handling – safe loading, retrieval, and transportation. Are special Launching and receiving facilities required?

Pig support & centralisation – disc configurations or wheel systems.

Sealing & flow control – optimising cup and disc arrangements.

Wear resistance – abrasion performance and material selection.

Bypass options – bolt holes or controlled flow paths.

Pressure management – differential pressures and flip pressures.

Integration with tools – gauging systems, brushes, magnets, or tracking devices.

Testing & trials – full-scale pig trials depending on system complexity.
